Starting the day with a plan and the intention to thrive is a powerful way to have a good day. Use these simple steps to create a daily plan proven to increase happiness and help you to feel grounded.
Wake up before the rest of the family
When you create the time and space to be alone with your thoughts, your ability to plan your day improves. Set the alarm 20 minutes before your kids or partner open their eyes. Once the alarm sounds, get out of bed. If needed, place your phone out of reach from the bed to ensure that you actually get up. Don’t open social media or emails. All of that can wait until you have completed the next steps.
Pour a warm cup of lemon water or coffee
Once you enter the kitchen, make your morning drink. If you can start with lemon water, your gut will awaken and you will flush your gut with water. Not only does lemon water aid in digestion, but it also improves your skin and has been shown to support weight loss. Once you flush your gut, then the coffee can be poured. Black coffee is my first pick for you! The fewer additives the better as you continue the 5 simple steps to happiness.
Start your mindset work
Your words are more powerful than any other catalyst for change. No coach or guru can talk you into believing in yourself; that’s your work. Begin your day with your mantra or words of affirmations that are specific to your insecurities and fears. Borrowing inspirational quotes online won’t work. You need to design your own mantra specific to you. If you have a notebook or journal, physically writing down your affirmations can help you to create your positive reality. After your affirmation is complete, write a daily goal to accomplish.
Soul work
As a holistic-minded coach, the idea of soul work or spiritual practice is key to improving happiness. Spirituality can be defined broadly as a sense of connection to something higher than ourselves. Some find it in religion and some in meditation, or if you are like me, you find it in both. Diana Robinson said, “Prayer is when you talk to God; Meditation is when you listen to God”. This is my personal experience with soul work. Define 5-10 minutes per day to dive into your spirituality.
Move your body
It’s simple. Move your body. You don’t have to run 10 miles or complete a challenging HIIT class. All you need to do is move your body 30 minutes a day. I prefer to accomplish this goal before lunch. Your pituitary gland makes endorphins and when you exercise you release endorphins. Endorphins help to minimize depression and anxiety, boost self-esteem, and reduce physical pain. Of course, the movement also promotes weight loss and muscle strengthening.
Moving forward
Follow these steps and learn how to have a good day. Adapting this new morning ritual is easy for the first week or so but continuing it can be challenging. Use discipline and focus to complete this process for 30 days until you begin to form habits around this work of self-mastery. Using a gentle mindset, understand that some days just don’t work out and you will skip the practice completely. That’s okay! The following day, get right back on track and move forward. After practicing these steps for the past five years, I can tell you that it has personally changed the outcome of my day for many years leaving me feeling grounded and focused on having a really good day.
